Lola T330 HU3 F5000 racing was dominated by one auto more than any other in the 1970s. With its super-low centre of gravity, the Lola T330 was known for its three-quarter tube chassis shape which combined lightweight with strength. In 1973 the Lola was the top car with an impressive 11 wins from 35 races. These are very rare in today’s classic market, it’s estimated that there are only 4 or 5 left in the world.
Maserati Tipo 61 ‘Birdcage’ Produced between 1959 and 1961, the TIpo 61 was also known as the ‘Maserati Birdcage’. The car was built to compete in the epic Le Mans 24 hour endurance race, although it never actually took 1st place. Drivers such as Sterling Moss can be credited with giving the car its iconic status and the motor did go on to win in the Nurburgring in 1960 and 61.
Lotus Type 72 In most classic car circles this auto is billed as the ultimate Formula 1 racing car. Maurice Philippe and Colin Chapman are credited with the design of the model in 1970. The car’s design raised the bar for Formula 1 racers; you can still see F1 cars have taken inspiration from the stressed engine layout and advanced aerodynamics more than 40 years later.
